To Senators Thune and Rounds and Representative Johnson:
I invite your leadership in Congress to formally designate a recreation area in the Rapid Creek watershed above Rapid City. This area is full of recreation opportunities – and outdoor recreation brings substantial benefits to Pennington County. Many types of cultural gatherings that take place in the watershed's region also benefit the local economy. Tens of thousands of local residents and tourists enjoy Pactola Reservoir and other parts of the Rapid Creek watershed in the Black Hills. Direct income from hunting alone in the Black Hills is about $89 million a year, and outdoor recreation supports 48,000 jobs in South Dakota. I would like this recreation area to include a mineral claim withdrawal, so that the tens of thousands of people who use this area for recreation know that it will always be there for them to enjoy hunting, fishing, bicycling, motorcycling, boating, snowmobiling, swimming, hiking, bird-watching, camping, equestrian activities, and ATV/UTV riding -- and enjoy the pure water and beautiful scenery in this area. Please take leadership on this issue in Congress and sponsor a bill to create the recreation area and mineral claim withdrawal, so that we can be blessed with the use of this recreational resource for ourselves and for future generations. Sincerely -- |
